Admissions
We are delighted that you are considering Skipton Girls' High School for your child's future education.
Everything you need to know about the application process is outlined below and our admissions team is available to help. As an Academy, we are responsible for our own admissions.
Skipton Girls’ High School is a selective school, so girls who wish to join the school in Year 7 sit a set of selection tests. If more girls are successful in the tests than can be offered places at the school, other criteria, including home to school distance are taken into account.
September 2026 entry
If you are considering Skipton Girls' High School for your child, you are warmly invited to our Year 5 Open Evening on Thursday 10 July 2025, 6-8pm. The admissions procedure will be explained in full. You can also find more information in our admissions booklet below. Please email the Admissions Office on admissions@sghs.org.uk if you have any queries regarding the admissions process.
Entrance test - familiarisation guide
In-year testing will take place to assess suitability for the school. The tests are produced by the School in English and Mathematics (plus Science for Year 10). These tests are based on national curriculum content appropriate to the age group. Each of the tests lasts for one hour.
If more students taking the assessment reach the required standard than there are places available, then the oversubscription criteria outlined in section 1.v. of the Admission Policy will be used to determine which applicants are offered places.
We do not normally admit into Year 11 (or late on in Year 10); however, exceptional circumstances may be taken into consideration by the Governors’ Admissions Committee.
Provisional testing dates for 2025:
- Wednesday 30th April 2025
- Thursday 26th June 2025
Registration closes 10 days before the test date. Please contact the admissions team if you would like to enquire about registration for in year admission tests: admissions@sghs.org.uk
Achieving the required standard does not guarantee a place at the school if the relevant year group is already full. Please refer to our Admissions Policy in the section below for further detail on admission of students after the start of Year 7.
Parents of candidates who have not been allocated a place have a statutory right of appeal.
Please note that for entry into Year 7 parents cannot submit an appeal until their child has formally received a secondary school place on National Offer Day at the beginning of March.
Information about appealing a school place can be found on the North Yorkshire Council website. Admission Appeal Forms and guidance notes on the appeal process can be downloaded from this website.
Forms must be completed and returned to the Admissions Appeals Office, North Yorkshire Council by the published deadline. Timelines and important dates can be found on the website
For more information, please contact North Yorkshire School Admission Appeals Office:
The Appeals Panel is constituted in accordance with the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 and all members are independent of the school and of the Local Authority. Its decisions will be binding on the Admission Authority and on the parents.
Pastoral Information
The transition from primary to secondary school is an important one and at Skipton Girls’ High School we endeavour to support our future students, parents and carers through this process.
Our relationship with our partner primary schools is vitally important to us especially as we recognise that our students represent a wide-ranging geographical area from small rural settings to inner city.
This section of our website will aim to celebrate our work with all these schools, as well as providing you with information about how we will support your child on bridging the gap during their journey to Year 7.
Mrs Fiona McMillan - Deputy Head, Mel Winter - Student Development & Achievement Leader (Y7 & Y8) and the Student Progress team will be on hand every step of the way.
On entering the school each pupil is placed in a mixed-ability vertical (aged 11-19) tutor group, which is carefully constructed to take into consideration issues such as friendship patterns and backgrounds. Our Vertical tutor groups are hugely successful and provide a supportive environment.
The tutor is the member of staff who will be in closest regular contact with your child. The tutor sees your child daily and needs to be aware of any problem affecting attendance, behaviour, homework or progress. Your child's tutor may contact you should problems arise
Each Key Stage (3,4 & 5) has a Student Progress Co-ordinator who has oversight of all students and works closely with your daughter’s tutor. They can be contacted at school if you have any queries or if problems arise.
